Initial assessment and service history
Before testing begins, we examine the watch’s reference, serial details, movement and available service documentation. This establishes what type of movement and components should be present, identifies any previous repairs and helps determine whether the watch requires a full service, targeted attention or further investigation. A timing reading without this context is not enough: a watch may appear accurate briefly while still showing wear, contamination or an underlying mechanical fault.
We record the watch’s condition before work is carried out. The case, crystal, crown, winding system, bracelet and clasp are checked for damage, excessive wear and signs of moisture ingress. We also inspect the dial and hands for deterioration or incorrect fitting. These checks protect the movement from external problems that could compromise precision after the watch has been returned to use.
Movement inspection and servicing
The movement is examined for dirt, dried lubricant, corrosion, worn pivots, damaged jewels and irregular movement in the gear train. Components are cleaned using appropriate procedures, then inspected before reassembly. Parts that are worn or unsuitable are replaced with correct, compatible components. Lubrication is applied at the specified points and in the appropriate quantity. Too little lubricant can increase friction and wear; too much can migrate and interfere with the movement. The movement is then assembled carefully, with the balance and escapement operating freely before regulation begins.
Timing and rate testing
We use a timing instrument to assess the movement’s rate, amplitude and beat error. Rate indicates whether the watch is gaining or losing time, amplitude shows the strength and consistency of the balance’s swing, and beat error indicates whether the balance is correctly centred in its oscillation. These readings help identify issues that cannot be confirmed through a visual inspection alone.
The watch is tested in multiple positions rather than in only one resting position. A mechanical watch can show different results when positioned dial-up, dial-down, crown-up or crown-down because gravity affects the balance and pivots. Comparing the readings helps us assess positional variation and determine whether regulation has produced a stable result rather than a favourable reading in one position only.
Readings are taken after the movement has settled and, where appropriate, at different stages of its wind. This helps reveal whether the rate changes as the mainspring’s torque falls. A watch that keeps time well only when fully wound may still need attention to the mainspring, automatic winding system, escapement or regulation.
Power reserve and winding checks
The automatic winding system is checked to ensure that wrist movement transfers energy efficiently to the mainspring. We also assess manual winding, the crown and the winding and setting positions. The power reserve is verified against the expected performance of the movement and its condition. An unexpectedly short reserve can indicate a weak or damaged mainspring, excessive friction, incomplete winding or a problem within the automatic winding system.
During this process, we check that the watch starts correctly, winds smoothly and sets the time without backlash or resistance. The date, day or other calendar functions are tested where fitted, including the correct operation of the changeover mechanism. Chronograph functions, if present, are checked for proper starting, stopping and resetting.
Case, crown and water-resistance checks
Precision testing does not replace protection checks. The case back, gaskets, crown, crystal and tube are inspected and renewed or serviced where required. If the model is intended to provide water resistance, the watch undergoes an appropriate pressure or water-resistance test after reassembly. Any test result must be considered alongside the age, construction and condition of the watch; water resistance is not permanent and does not make a vintage or reconditioned watch suitable for every water-related activity.
We also check that the crown screws down correctly where the design requires it and that the crystal and case back are seated properly. These details help prevent moisture entering the movement, which can cause corrosion and lead to a loss of precision even after the watch initially appears to be working normally.
Final inspection and documentation
After regulation and assembly, the watch is checked again rather than relying solely on the first timing results. We confirm that the rate remains consistent, the power reserve is satisfactory, the hands and dial are correctly aligned, the calendar changes as intended and the bracelet and clasp operate securely. The exterior is inspected for marks introduced during handling, and the watch is cleaned before it is approved.
We retain the relevant service and testing information so that the condition of the watch is clear. This may include the work completed, components replaced, timing observations, power-reserve findings and any limitations relating to age, originality or water resistance. Clear records are useful for future servicing and help distinguish a properly assessed reconditioned Rolex from one that has only been polished or cosmetically prepared.
These checks cannot promise that a mechanical watch will show exactly the same rate in every environment. Wearing position, temperature, shock, magnetism and the way the watch is wound can all influence performance. They do, however, provide a thorough assessment of the movement’s condition and establish that the watch has been serviced, regulated and inspected before it returns to you. If you notice a sudden change in timekeeping, reduced power reserve, moisture beneath the crystal or difficulty winding, stop using the watch and arrange an inspection rather than continuing to wear it.
