Choose a suitable storage location. A bedroom drawer, cupboard or other secure area away from windows is usually more appropriate than a bathroom, kitchen or conservatory. Bathrooms can expose a watch to repeated changes in humidity, while direct sunlight and radiators may affect lubricants, seals, dial finishes and straps over time. Avoid placing the watch near speakers, laptops, tablet covers, magnetic clasps or other strong magnetic sources, as magnetism can affect the accuracy of a mechanical movement.

Use the original box where possible. The presentation box is designed to protect the watch from dust, knocks and unnecessary handling. If it is not available, use a clean watch case with a soft, non-abrasive lining and a properly sized cushion. The watch should sit securely without being tightly compressed. An automatic watch that has stopped can generally be restarted in accordance with its operating instructions, but any unusual resistance, noise or lack of response should be assessed by a qualified watch professional.

Quartz watches require different consideration. If one is being stored for an extended period, ask whether the battery should be removed or replaced, particularly if it is approaching the end of its expected life. A leaking battery can damage the movement and surrounding components. Battery work should be carried out by a competent professional, especially on a valuable or water-resistant watch.

Store the watch in a stable position. There is no universal position that is required for every movement, but the watch should not be left where it can roll, fall or have its crown pressed against a hard surface. Keep complications, loose straps and bracelets supported by the case cushion rather than allowing them to hang under strain. If you store more than one watch, use separate compartments so that cases and bracelets cannot rub together.

Keep the watch’s box, warranty information, service records, valuation and other paperwork in a separate but secure location. These items help document the watch’s history and should not be stored where humidity, heat or accidental damage could affect them. The watch itself should also be kept discreetly and secured in line with the requirements of your insurance policy.

Inspect a stored watch periodically without repeatedly handling it. Look for condensation beneath the crystal, corrosion, a loose crown, a damaged strap, deterioration around the seals or signs of battery leakage. Do not wear a watch showing condensation or other damage, even if it appears to be running normally. Moisture inside the case requires prompt professional attention because it can affect the dial, hands and movement.
