A ring that has already become thin at the base may need strengthening or a replacement section rather than a simple adjustment.

Harder alternative metals can have significant limitations. Titanium, tungsten, ceramic and some modern speciality alloys generally cannot be resized using conventional methods. Some may be exchanged for a different size, while others can only be adjusted through a design alteration or cannot be changed without compromising the material. A ring made from one of these metals should not be forced over a ring mandrel, cut or heated without confirming that the material is suitable for the proposed work.

A channel-set or pavé band can require the setting to be rebuilt or adjusted so that the stones remain secure and evenly spaced. A full eternity ring, with gemstones all the way around the band, normally has no plain section where metal can be safely removed or added. It may be possible to alter the design, but this is more involved than resizing a plain band and may not be advisable for every ring.

Construction also makes a difference. Hollow or lightweight bands have less material to work with and can be vulnerable to distortion. A ring with delicate claws, openwork, hand engraving, milgrain edges, an under-gallery or a pronounced shoulder profile may need localised repairs after the size has been changed. Engraving and decorative details can be interrupted by a cut, so they may need to be reproduced or repositioned. Existing thinning, cracks, porosity, previous sizing joints and worn settings should be addressed before the ring is returned to regular wear.

Before resizing, the ring should be examined for metal condition, gemstone security, setting wear, hallmarks, solder joints and evidence of earlier alterations.
