- Precious metals and some alternative metals can be engraved, although the correct laser settings depend on the material and its composition. Plated, coated or treated surfaces require particular care because engraving may expose the layer beneath.

Design placement is just as important as the design itself. Engraving too close to a bevel, edge, setting, clasp or change in surface height can reduce clarity. On a ring, the inner circumference may offer enough room for a short inscription but not for a large, highly detailed image. On a pendant, the reverse may provide a larger area, although the position should be checked to ensure the piece remains comfortable to wear.
Jewellery containing gemstones can often be engraved, but the stone settings and surrounding metal must be considered first. A laser should not be directed at a gemstone unless the material and process have been specifically assessed.
