Can laser engraving be done on all types of materials used in bespoke jewellery?

Laser engraving is suitable for many jewellery metals, including gold, platinum, silver and stainless steel, but it is not appropriate for every material or gemstone. Each piece should be assessed first, as delicate, heat-sensitive or coated surfaces may require an alternative engraving method or may not be suitable for personalisation.

The material’s composition, surface treatment, thickness, shape and position all affect the result. Each item should therefore be examined before engraving to confirm that the design can be applied safely and clearly without compromising the piece.

Precious metals are generally well suited to laser engraving. Gold in different colours, platinum, palladium and sterling silver can usually be marked with a precise, permanent design. Laser settings are adjusted to suit the metal and the required finish. For example, engraving may be made deeper for a more visible design or kept finer for small lettering, dates, symbols and fingerprints. The karat, alloy and surface condition of the metal still need to be considered, particularly with unusual alloys or heavily textured finishes.

Some non-precious metals, including stainless steel and other jewellery-grade alloys, may also be suitable. They can produce a sharp, durable result when the correct laser wavelength and settings are used. However, a metal’s appearance does not always indicate its suitability. Certain alloys can react differently to heat, while plated or coated surfaces may show a contrasting base colour if the laser removes the outer layer.

Surface treatments require particular care. Rhodium-plated white gold, coloured coatings, blackened finishes, anodised surfaces and decorative plating may be engraved, but the process can expose the underlying metal or create a visible change in colour. This may be desirable for contrast, but it should be agreed in advance. If the finish is intended to remain uninterrupted, engraving may be better placed on an uncoated area or completed by another method.

Gemstones should not be treated in the same way as metal. Some stones can be marked in specialist circumstances, but laser engraving is not automatically safe for every gem. Heat, concentrated energy, internal inclusions and previous treatments can increase the risk of cracking, discolouration or other damage. Particular caution is needed with fragile, porous or treated stones, and with gems already set in a piece where the surrounding metal and setting may restrict safe access.

Diamonds and certain durable gemstones can sometimes be laser-inscribed in controlled conditions, usually on an appropriate facet or another carefully selected area. This is a specialist service and is separate from engraving the jewellery itself. A gemstone should always be assessed for its type, clarity characteristics, treatments and position before any work is considered.

Materials such as enamel, glass, ceramic, resin, acrylic, leather, wood and pearl may be unsuitable or may need a different process altogether. A laser can create excessive heat, discolouration, chipping, melting or an uneven mark on these surfaces. Pearls and other organic gems are especially vulnerable to heat and surface damage, so they are not normally treated as suitable engraving surfaces. Jewellery containing these materials may still be personalised by engraving a surrounding metal component, such as the inside of a ring, a pendant bail or a discreet plaque.

The shape and construction of the item are also important. A flat, accessible surface normally gives the most consistent result. Curved, highly polished or very narrow areas can limit the size and clarity of the engraving. Hollow components, delicate links and thin sections must be checked to ensure that the engraving will not weaken the structure or break through the material. On a ring, the inner band is often suitable, although the available space may restrict the length and scale of the wording.

Before proceeding, the jewellery should be inspected for its material, hallmark, plating, previous repairs, stone settings and general condition. The intended wording or artwork is then checked against the available surface. Where appropriate, a test mark can be made on a sample or an inconspicuous area to confirm contrast and legibility. For valuable, antique or highly finished pieces, the risks and likely appearance should be discussed before any permanent work begins.

If laser engraving is unsuitable, alternatives may include traditional hand engraving, machine engraving, engraving a separate metal component or placing the personalisation in a less exposed position. The most appropriate option depends on the material, the design, the desired depth and the way the jewellery will be worn. A professional assessment ensures that personalisation enhances the item without creating avoidable damage or an unsatisfactory finish.
