The ring must be positioned securely so the engraving remains even around the curve. Narrow bands and heavily shaped designs may only accommodate small, simple lettering.

Pendants, tags and lockets offer useful engraving surfaces, especially on the reverse or on a flat front panel. These pieces can accommodate initials, handwriting, dates, coordinates, illustrations and other fine details, depending on their size. Lockets require particular care because the hinge, clasp and internal construction must be protected during the process. Engraving on a polished reverse surface is often more predictable than engraving across a decorative or stone-set front.

Bracelets and bangles can be engraved on a flat plaque, identification plate or smooth inner surface. A solid bangle may also be suitable along the inside or outside, but its curvature and rigidity need to be assessed before the design is prepared. Chain links are generally less suitable individually because they are small, move during positioning and may not provide enough uninterrupted surface area. A connected plate or charm is usually a better option for personalisation.

Earrings may be suitable where there is a sufficiently broad, flat component, such as a disc, bar or removable charm. Small earrings often have limited space, so a discreet symbol, initial or short mark may be more appropriate than a long inscription. The design should also be checked for balance so that engraving does not affect the appearance or wearability of the pair.

Cufflinks, tie bars and other accessories are often good candidates because they commonly have smooth, flat faces. These surfaces can be suitable for monograms, initials, dates or a small motif. Any moving parts, textured borders and hinged mechanisms must be identified before engraving so that the design does not interfere with how the item operates.

Watch cases and case backs can usually be assessed for laser engraving, particularly where the back has a smooth metal surface. The case should be examined carefully to avoid the crystal, seals, crown, hinges and other working components. Engraving a watch requires accurate positioning and appropriate protection, as the finish and construction vary between models. The available space may be limited on a detailed case back, so the design may need to be simplified.

Common jewellery metals that may be suitable include:

  • Yellow, white and rose gold: solid gold alloys can generally be engraved, although the colour and composition of the alloy affect the resulting contrast and appearance.
  • Platinum: its density and durability make it suitable for engraving, but the finish and depth must be selected carefully to produce a clean result.
  • Silver: sterling silver can usually be engraved, though its softer surface may show scratches or wear more readily over time.
  • Titanium and stainless steel: these may be suitable for modern rings, watches and accessories, subject to the grade, coating and available equipment.

Jewellery with a plated, coated or coloured surface needs additional assessment. Laser engraving may remove or alter the surface layer and reveal the metal beneath it, creating a deliberate contrast or an unintended change in colour. Rhodium-plated white gold, blackened finishes, anodised metals, PVD coatings and other treatments should therefore be checked before a design is approved. Replating or refinishing may be required after engraving, depending on the desired result.

Gemstones are not automatically suitable for engraving. Some hard stones may tolerate specialist laser work, while others can fracture, discolour or react unpredictably to heat. In most jewellery, engraving is planned on the metal rather than across a gemstone. Settings must also be protected, particularly where the stone is close to the intended engraving area. Pearls, opals, emeralds and other heat-sensitive or included stones require especially careful handling and may make a piece unsuitable for certain engraving methods.

The best candidates have a smooth, accessible surface with enough thickness for a clear mark and no risk of weakening the structure. Extremely thin sections, hollow components, flexible links, heavily textured finishes and areas close to stone settings may not be appropriate. A laser can reproduce fine detail accurately, but it cannot compensate for insufficient space or an unstable surface.

Before engraving, the piece should be examined for its metal, construction, surface treatment, existing damage and previous repairs. The intended wording or artwork should then be checked for size, orientation, spacing and readability. Handwritten messages and fine symbols may need to be refined so that their important features remain clear at the scale available. The condition and age of an item are also relevant: vintage or delicate jewellery may need a separate conservation assessment before any permanent alteration is considered.
