Personalised engraved rings are best maintained with gentle cleaning, careful storage and protection from chemicals, impact and unnecessary abrasion. Remove the ring before swimming, exercising, gardening, cleaning, applying hand creams or carrying out manual work, and arrange professional inspection if the engraving becomes difficult to read, the setting feels loose or the metal is visibly damaged.

Clean the ring gently. For most plain gold, platinum or silver rings, use lukewarm water, a small amount of mild washing-up liquid and a very soft brush. Work carefully around the inside and outside of the band, including the engraved recesses, where soap, skin oils and dust can collect. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. Avoid brushing vigorously: repeated abrasion can soften the edges of fine lettering and make shallow engraving appear less distinct over time.

• Silver: silver may tarnish, especially in humid conditions. Clean it with a method suitable for the finish and avoid aggressive polishing over the engraved area.
• Gemstone rings: do not assume every gemstone can be soaked, brushed or exposed to ultrasonic cleaning. Some stones and treatments are sensitive to heat, chemicals, sudden temperature changes or vibration. A professional should confirm the safest cleaning method.

Inspect the ring regularly in good light. Check that the engraving remains legible, the band has no new dents or deep scratches, and any gemstone does not move or catch on clothing. Pay particular attention to the claws, edges and inside of the band. If the ring feels different, makes a rattling sound or catches repeatedly, stop wearing it until it has been examined. Continuing to wear a damaged ring can make a loose stone or weakened setting worse.
