What materials are used for engraving and personalisation services?

Each piece is assessed individually to confirm that its material, finish, thickness and design can be engraved safely and clearly; gemstones and delicate materials are usually personalised through the surrounding metal rather than engraved directly.

Engraving and personalisation are usually carried out on durable metal surfaces, particularly gold, platinum, silver and selected stainless-steel components. Precious metals commonly suitable for engraving include:

  • Yellow, white and rose gold: Gold can generally be engraved by hand or by machine, depending on the design and the level of detail required. Different alloys and carat grades have different hardnesses, so the finish may vary slightly between pieces. White-gold items may require particular care if they have a rhodium-plated surface, as engraving can expose the underlying metal and may affect the need for refinishing.
  • Platinum: Platinum is a dense, durable metal that is well suited to fine, precise engraving. Its natural white colour does not rely on plating, although the surface may develop a softer, brushed appearance over time as part of normal wear.
  • Silver: Sterling silver is commonly engraved and can accommodate names, dates, initials, messages and selected motifs. Because silver is relatively soft, it can acquire marks through everyday use, so the depth and placement of the engraving should be considered carefully.
  • Palladium: Palladium can be suitable for personalisation, subject to the design, construction and condition of the item. The exact alloy and surface finish are checked before confirming the work.

Some watch cases, case backs, clasps, buckles and bracelets made from stainless steel can also be engraved. Stainless steel is harder than many precious metals, so the available method and level of detail depend on the particular grade, surface treatment and shape. Brushed, polished, bead-blasted and coated surfaces can produce different visual results. Engraving a coated or coloured surface may reveal the metal beneath it, which should be discussed before approval.

Other materials require a more cautious assessment. Titanium, for example, may be engravable, but its hardness, colour treatment and protective coating can affect the finish. Ceramic, carbon-based materials, enamel, glass and some synthetic surfaces may be unsuitable for conventional engraving or may require a specialist process. Items with a plated, lacquered or PVD-coated finish must also be examined carefully, as cutting through the surface can change the appearance and may not be reversible.

Gemstones are not normally engraved as part of standard jewellery personalisation. Diamonds and coloured stones can be marked by specialist professionals in limited circumstances, but direct engraving requires a separate assessment and carries risks relating to the stone’s structure, inclusions and setting. Pearls, opals, emeralds and other delicate or porous gems are generally better left untouched. Where a design includes a gemstone, personalisation can often be placed on the surrounding metal, the reverse of a pendant, an inner ring surface or a suitable plaque instead.

The item’s construction is as important as its material. A ring must have enough metal in the chosen area to support the engraving without weakening the band. A watch must have a suitable flat surface, such as an appropriate case back or clasp, and care must be taken around seals, moving parts and manufacturer markings. Hollow jewellery, very thin sheet metal, intricate pierced designs and heavily textured surfaces may limit the position, depth or style of the engraving.

The existing finish is also considered. Polished metal, satin finishes, hammered textures and patterned surfaces may affect legibility. A design that is clear on a smooth inner ring may need to be simplified on a narrow bracelet or curved watch component. Where an item has existing engraving, marks or wear, the proposed personalisation is assessed alongside its condition rather than treated as an isolated alteration.

Before proceeding, the material and proposed engraving area should be inspected in person where possible. This allows the appropriate method, lettering style, placement and finish to be discussed, and identifies whether polishing, refinishing or other preparation may be needed. If direct engraving is not advisable, alternatives may include engraving a different metal section, adding a discreet plaque or selecting a compatible jewellery or watch component for personalisation.

For the best result, bring the complete item, including any box, papers or removable components that relate to it. This is particularly useful for watches and pieces with coatings or specialist finishes. A careful material assessment helps ensure that the engraving is suitable for the item and that its appearance, structure and future aftercare are properly considered.
