High-polish gold, platinum and silver can generally be cleaned and carefully polished when the metal is sound. However, the amount of material removed should be kept to the minimum necessary. Gentle cleaning may be suitable, but worn plating may require preparation and replating rather than further polishing. Any previous plating, colour variation or exposed base metal should be discussed before the work is authorised.

Gemstones and other materials affect the cleaning method. Diamonds and some durable gemstones can tolerate professional cleaning, but stones with inclusions, fractures or treatments may require a gentler approach. Porous or softer materials, including pearls, opals, turquoise, coral, amber and some organic gems, should not be treated like plain precious metal. They may be affected by heat, chemicals, prolonged soaking, ultrasonic cleaning or abrasive cloths. Pearls, in particular, should be wiped gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and kept away from abrasive polishing products.

Care is also needed around settings, glued components and articulated links. Immersing a piece may loosen debris into hinges or clasps, while strong vibration or pressure can aggravate a loose stone. The safest process may involve controlled, local cleaning after the repair rather than treating the whole item in one operation. Any stones, beads, enamel, leather sections or decorative coatings should be identified before a cleaning solution is selected.

A suitable repair process usually follows these stages:

  1. Inspect the necklace or bracelet, record its condition and identify the original finish.
  2. Check clasps, links, settings, soldered areas and decorative components for weakness.
  3. Remove surface dirt using a method appropriate to the metal and any stones or non-metal materials.
  4. Carry out the necessary repair before applying the final finish, unless limited cleaning is needed to examine the damage.
  5. Polish, brush, matt or refinish only the areas that require treatment, blending them with the surrounding surface.
